    Unit T Introduction Photo

The Hospital Infantil de México Federico Gómez in Mexico City includes a pediatric oncology wing and transplant unit for children. Prior to transplants, children must spend extended periods of time in the transplant unit, dubbed "Unit T," physically preparing for their procedure. During this time, they are moved from their usual location in the hospital to the transplant unit, taking with them clothing, toys, and other comforts. The unit, however, has limited space to store their things, making the transitional space even less hospitable and comfortable. The Mexico City team has designed a storage scheme for Unit T that is modular, easily cleaned for the necessary sterile environment, compact, and can accommodate clothing, toys, and more. The unit includes shelving and drawers, table space, and a vertical drawing surface. Currently two storage units are being prototyped for use in the transplant unit, with possible expansion into other pediatric wings of the hospital.

The team has begun other collaborations with the hospital, including the specification and provision of compact yet comfortable beds for the parents who spend nights next to their children in the therapy rooms. The hospital rules require that patients' parents stay with children in the therapy room 24 hours a day, but parents currently do not have anywhere to sleep other than a chair or the floor next to the patient's bed. The team has identified a foldable camping bed that fits perfectly in the available space and can be easily stored during the day not to obstruct the doctors circulation around the beds.
