About eduAction
EduAction is a design initiative intended to empower students (grades 2-9) by increasing engagement in the classroom. After spending some time observing active classrooms and meeting with teachers at Seattle's Morningside Academy for children with learning challenges, the design team came up with a series of observations, questions, and potential areas for design solutions. They focused their ideas on areas that could positively impact the students and have the capacity to be scalable to other schools and programs.
The first tool developed was an “engagement board” for the classroom that students and teachers could use in various lessons and activities. Thirteen prototypes of EduAction engagement boards, which combined a clipboard and response whiteboard, were created for teachers and students. In an effort to be conscious of material use and waste, existing school student clipboards were used as the base for the EduAction engagement board prototypes. EduAction engagement boards help students stay focused and interested in the task-at-hand, as they are able to record answers and show them to the teacher for real-time feedback and teacher observation.
In addition to the engagement boards, the team has developed a teacher's handout with attached teacher feedback form. EduAction is a collaborative process, and teacher feedback is crucial to its success. This EduAction will be developed by the team and the teachers into a broader system that includes refined product offerings and a suite of games and lesson plans to keep students engaged and help provide constant feedback to teachers.
